Youfeng Huang

Youfeng Huang est né à Kaohsiung, à Taïwan, en 1965. Il a grandi à la campagne, travaillant dans la rizière familiale. Étant l’aîné de cinq enfants, il aidait beaucoup ses parents et prenait soin de ses frères et sœurs. Comme tous les jeunes Taïwanais, il a fait son service militaire pendant deux ans. Il est ensuite allé à Tainan, pour étudier, et à Taipei, où il a travaillé comme ingénieur.

En 2000, il a immigré au Canada pour permettre à sa fille, qui a des besoins particuliers, d’obtenir une éducation adéquate. Il a ouvert un restaurant sur l’avenue du Parc. Étant très attaché aux valeurs chinoises qui valorisent le travail, Youfeng préfère travailler et gagner lui-même sa vie que de bénéficier de l’aide gouvernementale offerte aux immigrants.

Depuis qu’il est à Montréal, il dit avoir vécu certaines formes de discrimination dues à la langue. Selon lui, il y a beaucoup d’incompréhensions à l’égard des immigrants.

Youfeng parle ici des valeurs que lui ont transmises ses parents: l’importance d’étudier pour obtenir un bon emploi.

Youfeng Huang was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1965. He grew up in the countryside working in the family rice farm, before going to Tainan, and then Taipei, for school and work. He moved to Canada in 2000 in order to provide a better education for his daughter, who has special needs.

As the oldest of five children, he remembers helping out with the family farm and taking care of his siblings as a kid. Like everyone else, he served in the Taiwanese army for two years, before working as an engineer in Taipei.

In 2000, he came to Montreal, where his wife used to live, so that his daughter can have a better environment to grow up. He opened a restaurant on Avenue du Parc. Due to language barriers, he has faced hostilities at times. The Chinese work ethic is very important to him. He prefers to work hard and make his own living, instead of going on government welfare. For him, some people still harbour misunderstandings towards immigrants.
