Yuk-Kim Tung est née dans la province de Guangxi, en Chine, en 1916. Elle a eu la chance d’aller à l’école et d’étudier la comptabilité, de travailler et de voyager à l’intérieur de la Chine, ce qui était plutôt rare pour une femme, à l’époque. En 1946, elle est partie pour Hong Kong puis, en 1976, elle a immigré au Canada.

Mère de 8 enfants, son parcours d’immigration a représenté un grand défi! Aujourd’hui, ses enfants vivent dans différents pays.

Depuis son arrivée au Canada, elle a vécu à Toronto et à Montréal, deux villes dont elle a pu apprécier les différences. Elle habite maintenant l’une des résidences pour personnes âgées du Quartier chinois et se sent chez elle à Montréal… malgré l’hiver!

Dans cet extrait, elle nous parle de ses études et de sa carrière, en Chine.

Yuk-Kim Tung was born in Guangxi Province, China, in 1916. She has eight children, and was trained as an accountant working for the Chinese government. She moved to Hong Kong in 1946, and came to Canada in 1976. She now lives in a senior home in the Chinatown of Montreal.

Rare for the women at that time, Tung was able to receive an education, worked, and traveled while she was in China. Moving to Hong Kong and Canada presents different challenges, and her children are now living everywhere in the world. She has lived in both Toronto and Montreal and saw the differences in the two cities. She now feels at home here despite the winter!
